The basics

How to Play Wordle

The rules are simple: solve a five-letter word in six guesses. The tile colors tell you which letters to keep, move, or leave behind.

1. Enter a five-letter word

Start by typing any valid five-letter guess. Your first word is an information-gathering move. A useful opener tests common letters and gives you a mix of vowels and consonants to work with.

2. Read the tile colors

  • Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
  • Yellow: the letter appears in the answer but belongs in a different position.
  • Gray: the letter does not appear in the answer, or an extra copy was not needed.

3. Use every row as new information

Keep green letters fixed. Move yellow letters to positions you have not ruled out. Avoid gray letters unless the feedback shows that another copy of the same letter is present.

4. Watch for repeated letters

A word can contain the same letter more than once. If your guess includes two copies but only one is marked green or yellow, the other copy can be gray. That means the answer contains the confirmed minimum number of copies, but not necessarily every copy in your guess.

5. Solve within six attempts

You have six guesses to find the word. If you are stuck, open a progressive clue on the today’s hints page or use the Wordle Solver to check the constraints from your board.
